The kitchen elevator is basically a small service elevator, which is enclosed in a shaft and lowered onto the pulleys by ropes or chains, and then raised or lowered by a hand rope guided by a guide rail. Dumbwaiters began to be used around the beginning of the 19th century, but the first recorded use dates back to around 200 BC when the Romans used them to allow goods to move.
